All Revved up and Ready To Go

I never intended to write blog posts about dead people, but this one couldn’t go without comment either. Tommy Ramone, the final remaining original member of the Ramones, has died.

You could be forgiven for thinking that Rock n Roll excess was responsible for the deaths of the Ramones, but not so; only Dee Dee died rockstar-style, of a heroin overdose in 2002.  Joey, who died in 2001, had lymphoma, Johnny died in 2004 from prostate cancer, Tommy from bile-duct cancer.

The Ramones were a band who are responsible for changing music for the better, forever.  They came out of New York in 1974, becoming regulars at the legendary CBGB’s club, influencing the British punk scene, and all that followed.  They were not perfect people, but the were the perfect band.

The best comment I heard about Tommy’s death was a tweet from Pulled Apart by Horses,  which said “every band has a little bit of the Ramones in them”, and that’s a great legacy to leave.
